The papers consist of theatre posters/ programmes, production and rehearsal photographs, and policy documents relating to the work of Live Theatre from the 1970s to the present day. Notable artists who have worked with Live Theatre Company, and whose work is documented here, include the playwrights Tom Hadaway, C. P. Taylor, Michael Chaplin and Lee Hall; as well as the photographers Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen and Keith Pattison. Established as a theatre collective in 1973, Live Theatre has subsequently developed into one of the most significant new writing companies in the United Kingdom. The theatre’s work has been recognised on an international level; the most recent example of this being the transfer of Lee Hall’s The Pitmen Painters to Broadway in 2010. Yet the organisation has never lost sight of its origins in the Democratic Arts Movement of the 1970s, and it remains an extremely important part of the rich cultural life of the north east in general and Newcastle in particular. The theatre’s archive is currently in development. Researchers may be admitted to the collection through private appointment, and enquiries should be directed to Carole Wears:
